Derrick was born in Minot to Charles and Lori Miller and graduated from Sawyer High School in 1995. After graduation, he attended MSU for three years studying Computer Science. While attending college he drove school bus for Nedrose Elementary School and was the computer administrator. While working for Nedrose, he offered to DJ one of their Junior High dances with his home audio equipment. The next time they had a dance they asked him and it became sort of a routine. After college he got a job at ComputerLand of Minot as a network Technician. While working at ComputerLand, he met Dave in the Performance Audio division they became friends. At that time, Dave had his own small DJ service called Dave's Jukebox. Derrick asked Dave if he would help him play a Valentines day dance at the school. One thing led to another and he became Dave's assistant DJ. In 1999, Derrick joined forces with Dave working for State of Rock DJ service. Here he learned the in's and out's of the Trackspots and controller and how to program intelligent lighting effects. In the spring of 2001,Dave retired and Derrick became the head DJ for State of Rock on the main show. He quickly got over his fear of speaking into a microphone and talking to a crowd his first night alone. After nearly two years as the head DJ, having a beautiful little girl named Hailee, and becoming a Network Specialist at The Computer Store, he once again joined forces with Dave to form Big City Music.
